The wall behind them was already half-finished. It had been fastened using the Georgia method because the lead installer that day happened to be the guy who feared the humidity. If the Michigan guy had shown up ten minutes earlier, the house would have a different set of rules.

In my old life as a game balancer, this would be called a “broken mechanic.” If three players enter a dungeon and the rules of physics change based on which player reached the door first, the game is unplayable. You cannot win a game where the gravity is a matter of opinion.

Yet, in the world of exterior cladding, this is not seen as a failure of the system. We call it craftsmanship. We take the undocumented variation of local lineages and we give it a name that sounds like a virtue. We do this because we have no choice.

There is no National College of Siding. There is no central hall of records where the “Correct Way” is kept under glass. There is only the guy who taught you, the guy who taught him, and the specific mistakes they made that eventually became sacred rules.

The Engineering of “Proprietary Methods”

When a trade teaches itself, it does not converge on a single truth. It drifts. It works like the game of telephone, where a whisper starts as “use a galvanized nail” and ends later as “only use a hammer with a wooden handle on Tuesdays.”

But a house is not a poem. A house is a machine that sits in the rain and tries to stay dry. It is a thermodynamic puzzle. When we treat the assembly of that machine as an oral tradition rather than an engineering task, we lose the ability to predict how long the machine will last.

We cling to the idea of “the trade” as a mysterious guild because it gives us a sense of identity. We like the idea that we know something the average person doesn’t. But true craftsmanship is not the ability to memorize a secret.

It is the ability to execute a result that is repeatable. If I build a house today, and a different crew builds the same house next door tomorrow, those two houses should perform identically. If they don’t, we haven’t built a house; we’ve conducted an experiment.

When we remove the folklore, we don’t lose the soul of the work. We just lose the rot. We lose the callbacks. We lose the 1/8th-inch arguments that don’t actually matter when the material is designed to handle the load.

We gain a building that lasts longer than the man who built it. And that, in the end, is the only definition of craftsmanship that matters.
