The research, highlighted in Health Affairs recently, finds direct government financing to make a difference to development and research for the most innovative new drugs, which typically undergo the meals and Drug Administration’s (FDA) “priority-review” process for authorization. However, direct federal government funding is less important for research and development of so-called standard-review drugs that proceed through the FDA’s normal review process.
The research workers’ analysis can help determine the merits of various plan proposals, such as those that would try to recapture a share of drug earnings and return these to the government through recoupment or march-in authority. March-in proposes that taxpayers shouldn’t have to cover publicly funded research once through fees double, and through monopoly prices or restricted usage of drugs once. The researchers’ analysis found striking distinctions between priority-review drugs and standard-review drugs in terms of the proportion getting a public-sector patent.
The direct federal government role is a lot more pronounced for the state-of-the-art drugsthose receiving a priority review. The data also show that the indirect impact of authorities funding is a lot larger than the direct effect. Although fewer than ten percent of drugs had a public-sector patent, much bigger proportions of drugs acquired patents that cited a public-sector patent, a government publication, or both. In all full cases, the public-sector influence was much better on priority-review drugs than on those receiving a standard review. Professor Lichtenberg explains the importance of the analysis.
To be honest, at times where vets have been on the adcom even, my sense was that armed forces application final results could be expected very well predicated on some college pecking order, URM and GPA/GMAT formula. In the event that you were non-URM, your college and GPA/GMAT really predicted much in some fuzzy but clear way that consultants like me developed a feel for. I am not sure what “White Male, Latino” means for the reason that framework ethnically, but if both your parents are white, and you dig Latino culture really, and speak Spanish, that is not URM.

If you have a Hispanic surname and appearance really, white really, that is URM. Perhaps you can reveal more in a comment to this story. Anyway, if you qualify as URM, this is a strong military profile, given that UC-Berkley is a tie-one school in adcom’s mind. You also add: “Extracurriculars: Founded a talking to a group focused on the healthcare space. Lots of potential here but on your actual app, this should be unpacked more and it better remain credible. As mentioned, a reader is wondering how some full-time armed forces Captain has time for you to “found” a talking to the group, and what does that mean in this context? An AIDs clinic is a plus always, but we need more.
Ditto “healthcare start-up.” They are valuable undertakings, and even if you didn’t “found” them, I’d err privately of credibility and be very specific about what these organizations do and what you did. Not sure RA has much impact in general, although, sure, maybe it’s a role that have lessons for you, but we need to listen to that.
