The surgery has been available to severely obese patients for a decade, but the new study evaluated the risks and advantages of the procedure in those who were mildly obese. The research was led by bariatric surgeon Esteban Varela, MD, at Washington College or university School of Medication in St now. Louis.
Results of the new research, available online in the journal Obesity Surgery, coincide with a recent decision by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to broaden the utilization of gastric banding surgery in those who are mildly obese. This is a substantial step in weight problems treatment, says Varela, associate teacher of surgery.
The health threats even in mildly obese people can be life-threatening as time passes. Gastric banding surgery is currently open to adults with a BMI of 30 or even more if they have one obesity-related health condition, such as high bloodstream diabetes or pressure. Previously, patients could just have they surgery if that they had a BMI of 35 or even more. Somebody who is 5 feet 5 inches tall with diabetes would need to weigh 210 pounds to qualify for the procedure under the old guidelines. Now, that person would just need to consider 180 pounds.
About 27 million Americans have a BMI between 30 and 35 with least one obesity-related health condition. In the study, Varela compared outcomes in 30 consecutive obese patients who underwent laparoscopic flexible gastric banding surgery. Twenty patients were obese severely, and 10 were obese mildly. All the patients had attemptedto lose weight through medical weight loss programs but had not succeeded.
The researchers followed the patients for thirty days after the surgery. They found the task was just as safe in less obese patients as in those who had been severely obese. None of the patients in the analysis passed away, and minor problems, while few, only happened among those who had been obese severely. In addition, the task could be performed faster and resulted in less loss of blood among those who had been mildly obese. The process is safe and has the potential to help many more mildly obese patients lose weight and improve related health issues, particularly diabetes, Varela says.
These patients often have struggled for a long time to lose excess weight through diet and exercise programs and have not prevailed. This minimally invasive surgical procedure requires insertion of the silicone gastric band that suits around the top part of the tummy, restricting the amount of food an individual can eat and reducing appetite. The band can be tightened or loosened to adjust the size of the stomach.
